~ EPISODE ONE ~

Pochacco.  Figaro, Lord Sage! It’s good to see you again~!

Akira.  I couldn’t agree more!

Figaro.  Reuniting like this....perhaps miracles aren't so bad.

One day, Pochacco and his friends gained the ability to use magic and came to our world to play. Delighted to see each other again, we decided to enjoy a leisurely chat

Akira.  Pochacco,  I’ll set your tea over here.

Pochacco.  Thank you!  …Heave-ho,  heave-ho!!

Stretching out his short arms and legs, Pochacco tried his best to reach for the tea on the table.

Akira.  …Oh, I guess the table is a bit tall for you. Shall I hand it to you directly?

Figaro.  Pochacco, come sit on my lap.

Pochacco.  Hooray! Thank you, Figaro!

Figaro.  ….Hm?

As Figaro picked Pochacco up, his eyes widened.

Figaro.  That's surprising. You’re this light? Feels like I'm lifting a stuffed animal.

Pochacco.  Really?

Figaro.  Yup.  Even as a newborn, Mitile was heavier. But, considering your body’s size, I suppose it makes sense.

Akira.  Come to think of it  …  what is your height and weight, Pochacco?

Pochacco.  My height is the equivalent of four cups of my favorite banana ice cream! As for my weight, it’s about as much as three ghost carrots from the fields of Airy Town♪

The fanciful way of answering made me smile.

Akira.  S-So cute….

Pochacco.  Figaro?

Figaro.  Let’s see….  Since Dr. Figaro stands at 183cm tall, that’d be about five nougat yams♪

Akira.  ( He’s lying… )

Figaro's reply made Pochacco tilt his head.

Pochacco.  Nougat yam? I’ve never heard of those before.

Akira.  It's a vegetable from this world;  it can be used to make sweets.

Pochacco.  Wo~wie! That sounds delicious! I wanna try♪

Figaro.  If memory serves, they’re grown by a farmer in the City of Clouds. We could find some in the kitchen, but I’m curious about what they’ve grown in my absence.

~ EPISODE TWO ~

( Southern Country, City of Clouds )

Resident.  My, my? Is that you, Dr. Figaro? It’s been a while!!

Upon arrival, Figaro's appearance was greeted with a rush of people.

Resident.  I really want to thank you for examining my child. Their condition has greatly improved…

Figaro.  That’s good news. While it may no longer be necessary, I’ll give you something to minimize any future fevers.

Resident.  It helps. I feel I can rest a little easier. Having a doctor around really takes a load off. By the way, what brings you back here today? Running an errand?

Figaro.  Something like that.  A friend from afar wanted to try something  …  this child here.

Pochacco.  Hi there~!

Figaro.  He has an interest in nougat yams, so I brought him along to sample a few.

Resident.  Oh! I have some at home that are freshly picked; I’d be happy to share.

Pochacco.  I wonder what it’ll taste like? I’m getting super excited~!

With a curious gaze, he looks at the delicacies brought back.

Pochacco.  Hmm~ so these are the yams. They look similar to what’s in my world! And Figaro’s the equivalent of five of these! So big, yet so light~

Resident.  Equivalent of….?

Akira.  Oh…uhm, well….

Figaro.  Aha, don’t worry about it.

Resident.  Actually, I just made some sweet potatoes with these. Care to try some?

Pochacco.  Sweet potatoes? I’d love to! Delicious~♪

Akira.  It’s really sweet in taste;  try as much as you like!

Figaro.  Nougat can be cooked in a variety of ways, but sweet potatoes are especially exquisite.

Resident.  I'm glad. If your friends are happy, doctor, then this was worthwhile. I have plenty, so feel free to take some home and  share them with Mitile, Rutile, and Lennox.

Pochacco.  May I share it with my friends too? It’s so yummy that I want everyone to try!

Resident.  You’re adorable! Of course; please bring however many you’d like.

Pochacco.  Thank you so much~!

Akira.  Isn’t that great, Pochacco?

Pochacco.  Yes! I feel happy after eating good food♪ My dream is to eat a full bowl of banana ice cream; but, I can confidently say these sweet potatoes are extra delicious!

Figaro.  A belly filled with ice cream? What a good dream.

Pochacco.  Ehehe. What do you dream of Figaro?

Figaro.  Well  …  I’d say creating a world where wizards and humans can live peacefully.

Pochacco.  I see! I admire this town, where wizards like Figaro and Mitile, and even the humans live together with smiles on their faces! It's kind of like Puroland.

Akira.  Puroland?

Pochacco.  I’ve got lots of friends there and we get along well!

Akira.  I see  …  I guess that’d be true.

In the South, this way of life is what’s normal. The same cannot be said for other countries.

Akira.  ( I hope it can be like Puroland, someday. )

Figaro.  Is that so… Puroland is a place filled with happiness, right? Someday, it’d be nice to visit.

~ EPISODE THREE ~

( Puroland )

After a journey through the City of Clouds and the Magic Manor, Pochacco brought us to Puroland. While walking along, Pochacco was approached by many friends.

Friend.  Pocha~! It’s been a long time! We should go skateboarding sometime soon!

Pochacco.  Of course! We’ll play together sometime!

Akira.  You’ve so many friends.

Pochacco.  I’m just like Figaro♪

Figaro.  Me?

Akira.  Aha, you were surrounded just like this in the City of Clouds.

Pochacco.  Everyone loves you!

Figaro.  It kind of tickles me to be told by someone as popular as you, Pochacco.

Pochacco.  There’s still people I want the both of you to meet. I’m sure meeting Figaro and Lord Sage would make them extra happy!

Pochacco took us by the hand and led us to where his friends gathered.

Pochacco.  Allow me to introduce my friends:  Lord Sage and Figaro!

Akira.  It’s nice to meet you;  I’m the sage.

Figaro.  Figaro. Nice to meet you.

Friend.  Wow~ you’re Pochacco’s friends? Greetings. Welcome to Puroland♪

Akira.   ….Pochacco’s friend’s are all so cute!!

Figaro.  Thanks for the welcome. I brought you all a little something today; please, take it as a token of our friendship.

Figaro pulled out some sweet potatoes.

Pochacco.  These were really good. Let’s eat ‘til our bellies are full~♪

Friend.  Hooray! This looks delicious~!

Pochacco’s friend happily bites down.

Akira.  Looks like everyone’s eating well.

Pochacco.  Mhm♪ Mitile and the others also looked happy. Their beaming expressions are etched in my memory even now. Eating yummy food with your friends is always a way to bring up the mood!

Figaro.  Mhm, I agree.

With a nod, Figaro looked out at the view of Puroland, where a smile spreads across his face.

Figaro.  Perhaps this place is closer to the world I'm dreaming of. Now, I just have to see how I can make it come true. Pochacco, will you show me around?

Pochacco.  It would be my pleasure!

At Figaro's smile, Pochacco answered with one of his own. I have seen so many smiles today, and I am sure there will be more to come. That thought brings a sweet yet happy feeling to my heart.

~CE: MORE THAN SWEET POTATOES~

Akira.  Is that you Figaro?

Figaro.  Morning. Come to get something to eat?

Akira.  I was thirsty, so I thought I'd make a cup of tea. More importantly, you have a very large container. What's in it?

Figaro.  Take a look.

Akira.  .... Nougat?!

Figaro.  I went to deliver something in town earlier. In return, the people gave me a small box to take back with me. Initially, it was a small box....but everyone brought their own and filled it up, so the container got bigger and bigger.

Akira. Haha, I see. Still, with this many, it looks like we can make a lot of sweet potatoes. We might not be able to eat them all, even if everyone in the magic house came together.

Figaro.  Given the abundance of ingredients, why not try something other than sweet potatos? Pochacco's favorite was banana ice cream, but nougat ice cream might not be so bad.

Akira.  That sounds good. I know ice cream can made with sweet potatoes in my world...I think it'd be fun to try.

Figaro.  We should ask Nero to help us make it. To get the best flavor, we'll be experimenting with different formulas....

Akira.  You look like you're having fun.

Figaro.  Oh, you could tell? I imagined how Pochacco would react if I fed it to him the next time he came over.

Akira.  I'm sure it'd be a big hit; I'm looking forward to this!

~ EPISODE ONE ~

Akira.  Thanks for your time today, Figaro. This is something I've been wanting to learn for a long while, so it's great having you here to teach me!

Figaro.  Happy to be of help. It’s always a pleasure to have you depend on me.

With a cheery smile, Figaro invited me in; today, I came for a lesson in first aid.

Figaro.  With your role as sage, I'm guessing you're busy. I admire you for trying to learn something new.

Akira.  That's not entirely true…. Everyone’s always willing to lend a helping hand. In times of trouble, I figured that, even if I can't use magic, I can still be of help.

Figaro.  I like your positive attitude. Healing magic isn’t a cure-all, so I think there's value investing in these things. Let's start with the basics: stopping the bleeding. Our students are spirited. Lots of bloodshed.

A number of past events immediately come to mind. I can't count the number of times I recoiled at the sight of them bleeding.

Akira.  I’ll do my best to keep that in mind!

Figaro.  Ha ha. Good enthusiasm. To start, make sure you rinse the wound well with clean water, if you can find it. Second, apply pressure. Can I borrow your arm for a second?

With this, Figaro takes my hand. Without hesitating, the way in which he checks my pulse is certainly indicative of a medical professional.

Figaro.  As an example, let's say you experience a cut here. In such cases, apply the cloth as so: if the wound is shallow, you press directly above it. For deeper cuts, this might take a little courage, but place the cloth down on the wound….

One after another, he demonstrated how to treat the wounds according to their condition. As I leaned forward, so as not to miss anything, I felt a lock of Figaro's hair brush against my head.

Akira.  ( Incredible. Figaro’s eyes… )

When I turned my head to look at him, he had a serious expression. As I watched, absorbed by his demeanor, Figaro shook his shoulders and chuckled.

Figaro.  Hehe…~ Sage, keep an eye on your hands. I'm a good-looking guy, so it's understandable why you're admiring me.

Akira.  S-Sorry! I was thinking that, you know, you give off a professional look….

Figaro.  What? You weren't just fawning over me? Well, then, I'll show you something even better from a professional point of view. There's one very important thing that will help in any situation.

Figaro gently released my arm, which he had been using for the demonstration, and raised his index finger in an emphatic gesture.

Akira.  I wonder….bandaging or something?

Figaro.  That's one thing, of course, but what's more important is to keep your priorities straight. That means assessing the seriousness of the injury and deciding who should be treated first, based on the situation. Let’s say Mithra and I were equally seriously injured while fighting, which of us should be treated first?

~ EPISODE TWO ~

Akira.  Certainly…

Figaro's question left me at a loss. With a short pause, he answers.

Figaro.  The answer is Mithra. Once Mithra is healed, we can escape through the spatial door. However, even if I'm cured, it won't open up any other path than continuing the fight. Therefore, sage… You are right to prioritize Mithra, regardless of whether I cling to your leg and beg you to help me.

As if speaking about some other person, Figaro, without a care in the world, suggests choosing Mithra over himself. Because it's optimal.

Akira.  ( …Up to now, there have been many dangerous situations. So, I understand what Figaro is saying. But…. )

My heart can't accept that as the correct answer.

Figaro.  Well, despite that, Mithra will probably refuse treatment from anyone if the situation is really that dire.

Akira.  ….Figaro….

Figaro.  On the other hand, I would gladly accept your help. If it comes to it, will you help me instead of that selfish guy?

I feel a little relieved to hear Figaro say it in a deliberately playful manner. Grateful for his kindness, I searched for words.

Akira.  …I know what Figaro is saying is important for all of us to survive. And yet, to choose someone in that way….  ….I….

Figaro.  Of course, I understand. After all, the one who can save the day is you. Now, I hope I've given all the first aid instructions you need. Good work. That's all for today.

Akira.  Thank you very much, Figaro. I learned a lot.

Figaro.  You did your best, sage. …Let's have a cup of tea and take a breather.

Figaro used his magic to arrange a tea set. It was at that moment──

Snow.  There you are, sage!

White.  We’ve been looking everywhere~

Akira.  Snow!  White!

Figaro.  You two…. don't barge into someone's room without knocking.

Snow & White.  Forget about that, it's an emergency!

Akira.  Emergency?

Snow.  Yes! We ran into a bunch of naughty boys from the North in the common room and Oz got in a fight.

White.  The Western wizards started cheering them on with tambourines…and then the wizards of the East got involved! It was chaos!

Snow.  Which is why we’ve come to you.

Snow & White.  Please, sage, help us~!

~ EPISODE THREE ~

Akira.  I don't really understand what's going on, but I'll be there!

Figaro.  Will you be alright? Want me to come with you?

Snow.  Positively not. They’re in “beat down the strong” mode.

White.  If those naughty children see your face, you can guarantee more havoc will come.

Figaro.  Sounds more like beasts…

Akira.  Sorry, Figaro. The timing’s….

Figaro.  Nothing to apologize for, Sage. It’s tough, but hang in there.

Akira.  Right!

Figaro.  ….Hah…. Though I planned to spend some time with the sage, someone took them away.

Figaro.  ( The twins will probably offer to invite the sage to tea as a thank-you once the ruckus is over.

And they're too kind to not agree…. )

Figaro.  ….Is tea enough for one person? Oh, right, I should prepare for tomorrow's class. Let's see, here's what we need…

Figaro.  ( …Something like this? Took longer than I thought it would. )

Figaro.  …Woops, forgot the tea. Ah, it's cold. ….It would be a hassle to re-brew it…. Yes? Hold on a second. I'm coming.  …Eh?

Somehow, the person who greeted me had a remarkably surprised expression.

Akira.  Sorry for the wait, Figaro.

Figaro.  …Welcome back. Did everything pan out?

Akira.  Fortunately, there were no injuries and the magic house didn't suffer any damage.

Figaro.  Good to hear. However, haven't Lords Snow and White asked you out for tea as a thank-you?

Akira.  Oh…they did. But, prior to leaving, we were going to have tea together so I declined…

Figaro.  Such a waste. I can’t serve delicious sweets to accompany the tea, unlike them.

Akira.  B-But…  you extended an invite first.

Figaro slightly raised his eyebrows at the answer. Finally, he chuckled.

Figaro.  For that reason alone, you chose to come here.

Akira.  Yes. …Oh! By any chance, did I bother you by barging back in? If so──

Figaro.  Oh, no. No, no. It's not like that. …That’s just the kind of person you are. Come in. I'll make us some tea. A warm, delicious cup that will make you feel at ease after a hard day's work.

With those words, Figaro widely opens the door. His smile is brighter than the one he wore when I first visited.

~CE: FIGARO AND THE DOOR TO THE PAST~

Akira.  On the beach of Borda Island, it seems that a door apparently lets you see into the past. Speaking of the past, there was a certain memory I would bring to mind whenever I felt anxious back when I first came to this world.

Figaro.  Memory of what? A quiz?

Akira.  It's not a quiz. Rather, it's a moment from my childhood when an adult, someone I trust, would read a book to me.

Figaro.  I see. Recalling those memories helps you to calm down.

Akira.  That’s right. Figaro, when you feel lonely, how do you comfort yourself?

Figaro.  …That’s…  If I knew better ways to comfort my loneliness, I wouldn't be like this…

Akira.  The method doesn’t need to be “better.” I’m just curious

Figaro.  I wonder. Although I'm a proud and self-centered individual, I'm the type of person who is devoted. There's not much I want to do for myself. Instead, I prefer helping those I like and I'm good at supporting them. So, without someone to take the initiative, you know, I can't survive for long.

Akira.  I see….

Figaro.  When you find the right people to give your strength and passion to, you can’t help but rejoice…. But, when it doesn't work out, you shrug and walk away to live on your own… I can't be a recluse like Oz or Faust for a couple hundred years. I'm empty inside, and no matter what I do, I'm going to miss people.

Akira.  Such a thing…. The fact that you love people is one of Figaro's best qualities, or rather, one of your sweetest qualities.

Figaro.  Thanks, sage. Well, I was under the impression that it was a matter of supply and demand. Without someone to wish upon and please, God alone cannot be God. And so, I comforted my loneliness with others. I was often disappointed, frustrated, and my loneliness deepened…. After a separation, nothing remains. Lately, I've begun to think that way.

Akira.  Figaro…

Figaro.  The same goes for your farewell, I hope.

  ~ EPISODE ONE ~

On that day, I was assisting Figaro with his medical work and came to the Swamp of Pestilence.

Figaro: You're a real life-saver, sage. Thanks to you, I wrapped up earlier than planned and had time to see some other patients. Thanks for accompanying me all the way out here; hope you didn't get too tired from the heat and humidity.

Akira: Well, it was my choice to follow along;
I'm the one who should be thanking you for being so accommodating. Watching Figaro work is, admittedly, kind of fun.

Figaro:
You really are modest, aren't you? Allow me to show you around, as a show of gratitude. We've come all this way, so, let's take some time and relax.

Akira: That sounds nice. Then, if it wouldn't be a bother, I'd love to!

As we walk along the waterfront...

Swamp Resident: Oh, Dr. Figaro. Around for your regular checkups? Many thanks for all your help.

Figaro:  Yup, everyone is looking as good as ever.

Swamp Resident:  Greetings, Dr. Figaro! I harvested some delicious fruits,  take as many as you'd like.

Figaro:  You have my thanks.  Remind me to stop by later, alright?

Swamp Child:  Dr. Figaro!  Lookie, lookie!  The leg you looked at last time is all better now!

Figaro:  It's good to see you run around again. Just don't go doing anything reckless.

Akira:  To be approached by everyone we meet, you're really loved,  Figaro.

Figaro:  Haha, and I'm grateful for it. However, I'd like to talk a bit more with you as well. Hey, sage, I know a great place where we can be alone.

(Scene Change)

Akira:  Wow! I didn't know canoeing could feel so good!

Figaro:
I'm glad you're having fun. At least here, it's just the two of us, and we can spend some quality time together. It's also way cooler on the water than by the shore.

The surface of the water is beautiful as it glistens and bounces in the light. The surroundings are lush and green and the flowers vibrantly colorful. The canoe moves slowly, thanks to Figaro's magic.

Akira:  Not having to worry about paddling feels like a luxury.

Figaro:  Rowing can be a source of enjoyment, though. But it's physically exhausting. After all the hard work we've done today, I thought I'd take the easy way out.

Akira:  Haha, I'm fine, though. This kind of humidity is something I'm familiar with.

~ EPISODE TWO ~

As we continue along the water's surface, enjoying the beautiful scenery, we come upon a tree which looks as if a large marble hung from it.

Figaro: Oh, it's a marine tree.

Akira:
If I recall correctly, this is a specialty here. Those dangling, round things are fruits, right?

Figaro: You know of them already?

Akira: When I was here before, Rutile told me all about them! You can even drink the juice; it was really sweet and refreshing!

Figaro: That's right. Then, today, I'll treat you to a special version by yours truly.

With a wave of finger, a snow-covered breeze brings the fruit over. The berries, like large translucent marbles, were dropped into my hand.

Akira: Woah! So cold ... did you freeze it?

Figaro: Good guess. Try taking a bite.

Akira: Alright, then... ?! This is delicious!? Oh, wow, it's like sherbet!

Figaro: Ahaha, glad you approve. Only those familiar with magic can eat them in this manner; we should pick a few to surprise Mitile and the others.

Akira: That sounds like a wonderful idea!

As we savored the frozen sea berries, our eyes wandered back to the flowing waterfront. Then, I spotted a single bud of a flower, majestically rising from the water's edge.

Akira: Oh, Figaro. Over there. I don't think I've ever seen a flower with these colors.

Figaro: Hmm? Flower?

Akira: Look, it's right there. See? It's still in the bud, but the petals are a bluish gray.

Figaro: That's—

Akira: It's beautiful, isn't it? Kind of reminds me of your hair color.

Figaro: ...Sage?

Akira: I wonder what it will look like when it blooms. Do you know, Figaro?

The colors look mature, fitting with the calming tones I associate Figaro with. When I looked up and over at him excitedly, Figaro seemed to be thinking about something with a hand on his chin.

Akira: ...Figaro?

Figaro: ...Ah, no. Sorry, it's nothing. This is known as a "double flower." When the buds open, the petals overlap in several layers, and are known to look quite beautiful.

Akira: I see! I really hope I can see them in bloom, next time.

Figaro: .....

We returned to the village, yet, before we returned home, Figaro instructed me to wait a while and disappeared.

Akira: (I wonder if something's happened. Figaro hasn't come back yet ... walking around shouldn't be a problem, right?)

During my walk, I find where Figaro had run off. He's speaking with a villager and I can see that he's holding something in his hands.

Akira: (Huh...? Isn't that the bud we saw earlier?)

Figaro: This plant shouldn't be here. It's probably an effect of the Calamity's influence; never thought it would show up here, though. If you see this flower, burn it down from a safe distance or send a request to the sage manor.

Akira: ....Eh?....

~ EPISODE THREE ~

Akira: (...burn it down? The flower?)

The conversation proved unexpected and puzzling. Then, Figaro's eyes met mine. No sooner does Figaro open his mouth does the person in front of him bow his head.

Swamp Resident: I understand. Thank you for getting rid of the poisonous flower, Dr. Figaro!

Akira: ....!?

Figaro walks over to me with a bittersweet smile as he waves off the departing resident.

Akira: Uhm, Figaro...is that flower really...

Figaro:
Ha-ha ... guess the truth is out. This flower has poisonous pollen. As a bud, it's harmless; but, when it blooms, it spills into the air. So, I can't afford to leave it there.

Akira: I see. I didn't know they were so dangerous...

Akira: (And we have to burn them down....even though they're beautiful.)

As I was lamenting my disappointment, Figaro surprisingly offered me the bud he'd been holding.

Figaro: Well, I had hoped to present this a bit more smoothly
—this is for you, sage. Don't worry about the poison.

Akira: ...eh, for me? Thank you ... oh, it feels really strange.

Figaro: There's a spell on it to prevent it from blooming. Because of this, they may look different from fresh flowers.

According to him, these buds will never open ... but will remain beautiful for a long while without the fear of withering.

Figaro: Truth is, I intended to burn it right away. But you called it beautiful...even said it reminded you of my hair. I couldn't bring myself to show you such a sight. At the very least, I wanted to preserve their memory. I'm sorry I can't show you them in bloom, sage.

With lowered brows, Figaro smiles apologetically.

Akira: (I see...because of my excitement and wish for them to grow, Figaro's
—)

Akira: Please don't apologize. It is dangerous, but I'm just grateful you left it like this. Besides, more than anything, I'm really glad my words left such an impact. Thank you, Figaro. I will treasure your gift!

Figaro: ...Haha. You really are modest. Well, it's about time we head home; I'm sure everyone's wondering where we've been.

Akira: Yes sir!

Figaro takes out his broom and we take off into the night sky. And so, our time in Southern Country comes to a close. Feeling the wind beneath our feet, I hold a bud of the same color as the hair that swayed in front of me close to my heart.

  ~ CE : A DIFFICULT PROPOSAL ~

Akira: Figaro, thanks for taking me canoeing the other day! You had us paddling by magic, last time, but it would be fun to actually paddle together.

Figaro: I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Though, as for paddling together....

Akira: ...Oh, sorry. That is physically challenging, and Figaro's lived a long time...

Figaro: Hang on now, what is it you're trying to say? I may not be young, but I can handle a canoe. It's just that there's a rumor surrounding the one we took.

Akira: A rumor?

Figaro: Yup. They say if two people row together, they become incompatible.

Akira: (Huh...I think there's a similar legend back home. Something like: if a couple were to ride this together, they'd break up.)

Akira: I'd rather not be on bad terms with you, so....

Figaro: Ahaha! Ah, you're a fun one. There's no curse attached to it or anything The canoe is just more difficult to paddle than others because of its peculiar shape. Therefore, it's easy to get into trouble, such as "It's your fault that I can't change direction!," or something like that.

Akira: Oh, so that's what you mean ... two people who row together become incompatible.

Figaro: Mhm. But, when you think about it, I doubt the two of us will have such issue.
—Care to have some fun together?

Akira: Yes! Let's row together, next time!

~ EPISODE ONE ~

(Dining Hall)

Rutile.  Dr. Figaro!

Mitile.  Dr. Figaro!

Akira.  Happy Birthday!

Lennox.  Happy Birthday.

Rutile.  We prepared all of your favorite snacks and dishes. Eat as much as you like!

Figaro.  Thanks.
Hmm, they
all look good, so choosing is difficult.

Mitile.  Doctor! This is a letter from my brother and I. We wrote with our whole heart to express our gratitude for your kindness, so please read it when you get a chance!

Figaro.  Receiving a letter from you both makes me happy;  I’ll take a look at it later.

Lennox.  The sake is from me. It is said the aroma changes each time the glass is tipped.

Figaro.  Oh, this is pretty good stuff. Looks like you splurged. Let’s share a drink, when I open it.

Figaro seems delighted with the gifts from the southern wizards. I offered the gift I prepared.

Akira.  Figaro, I have something for you too.

Figaro.  The Flower Carnival… Is this what Mitile and the others have been talking about?

Akira.  Yes. This is the invitation. You see, Shylock's old acquaintance handed it down to him, and without an invitation, visitors can't get in.

Figaro.  Heh, is that right. Stylish invitations, too — extremely beautiful and elaborate.

Akira.  I tried making it a little more colorful, so I'm glad to hear you say so. After the party, if you'd like, perhaps we can go together? As a birthday gift, I’d like to escort you, Figaro.

Figaro.  Sure, to be escorted by the sage is an honor. I'll look forward to it.

~  EPISODE TWO  ~

(Figaro’s Bedroom)

Once the celebration was over, I went to Figaro's room.

His door opened before I had the chance to knock, and he welcomed me through.

Figaro.  Welcome, I’ve been waiting.

Akira.  Good evening. Although the invitation was made, are you not tired? Your party was so lively…

Figaro.  As you can see, I'm perfectly fine. Like I said, I'm looking forward to this.

Akira.  Ahaha, I’m glad. Well, would you mind writing your name down on the invitation card first? Then, once you chant your spell, the playground doors will open.

Figaro.  Got it.  …. <Possideo.>

In the next moment, after Figaro had cast his spell, light streamed from the invitation, and a door slowly began to open. The area was gradually enveloped in a sweet aroma and a white mist.

(Casino)

When the mist cleared, the scene before my eyes changed drastically.

Figaro.  As expected of Shylock’s friends. It's a classy place. Moreover, I didn't expect to be provided with such a fashionable outfit.

Akira.  He says it's a way of showing hospitality to those who are invited. In fact, I think it suits you and the atmosphere of this place.

Figaro.  Really? Do I look handsome?

Akira.  You look very handsome!

Figaro.  Being praised by you makes me happy,  sage. Well then, tonight, this handsome Dr. Figaro delightfully asks you to be his escort.

Akira.  I … I’ll do my best!
Then, uhm…Have a seat at the counter.

I sat beside Figaro after encouraging him.

Akira.  …Aa, it seems we picked a good time, the tin doll has some drinks.

The doll brought two glasses, a drink, and several small candles. Leaving one on the counter, I wrap up the remainder and hand them to Figaro.

Figaro.  Alcohol and….?

Akira.  These are flower candles. I made them using flowers from the playground.

Figaro.  You handmade these?

As I nodded, I clapped my hands together. As if responding to my cue, the lights dimmed and the entire casino went dark. I strike a match and light the candle.

Figaro.  ….

The flame, a mixture of soft blue and hazel, burned quietly. Softly, warmly, it illuminated the area.

~  EPISODE 3  ~

Figaro.  …That’s a unique color.

Akira.  It turns out that if you use these flowers in a candle, the flame will be lit in the color of the petals… Through trial and error, I succeeded in producing this color.

While explaining, liquor is poured into Figaro's glass.

Figaro.  Thank you;  here, sage.

Akira.  Thank you very much.

Figaro poured some juice for me. We clink our glasses together.

Figaro + Akira.  Cheers!

After taking a sip, Figaro fixed his eyes on the candle.

Figaro.  …What a beautiful flame. Looking at it relaxes me.

Akira.  …Actually, these candles were made with Figaro's image in mind. The blue reminds me of your hair, and the hazel…

Figaro.  My eye color.

Figaro grinned and slowly blinked, as if he were savoring candlelight.

Figaro.  Thank you. I think it's very special.

He said this to me as he breathed deeply.

Akira.  I'm glad…. I was actually really worried about what kind of gift I could give that would make Figaro happy. Then, I decided to give you something that would allow you to relax, and I tried in my own way, but all I could manage was something small like this…

Figaro puts down his glass and smiles at me.

Figaro.  Sage. Right now, can you imagine how happy I am?

Akira.  —Eh?

Figaro.  I was happy just to be able to spend this day with you, but to receive such a special present that you worked so hard to come up with, in such a special place…But that's not all. You were thinking about me, worrying over me, and preparing with me in mind. Everything you put your heart and soul into is precious and makes me happy.

Akira.  …Figaro.

The flame burned like a blooming flower, small and healthy. His gaze was calm, staring warmly into colors which matched his own.

Figaro.  I will never forget. Like this flame, today's moment feels warm.

His voice, as he muttered that, had a warm sound. Unexpectedly, a flurry of petals started to fall. Figaro picked them up between his fingers.

Figaro.  …Petals? Where…?

Akira.  ( That’s right,  it’s our return signal… )

When the heart of the invited participant is satisfied, petals dance as if to announce that the exit of the playground will be opened. The area became increasingly shrouded in fog. Next thing I knew, we were back in Figaro's room.

Figaro.  …What a luxurious moment. Tonight was a lot of fun; a lovely escort and gift to top it off.

Akira.  No, no, it's my pleasure... The many kind words I received made me happy, too. Figaro, happy birthday once again. I hope that this year will bring you happiness and many joyous events.

As I said this with my whole heart, his eyes became soft and narrowed.

Figaro.  Thank you for the blessings, sage.  …Hey, how about you take it easy for a while? I’d like to chat with you a little longer; care to tell me about your trial-and-error candle-making process?~

His invitation sounds like he’s telling me that he wanted to cherish today.

Akira.  Yes, of course! There were plenty of mistakes, though, so this’ll be a long story.

Figaro.  That's all I can hope for. We'll just sit back and watch the flames. After all, my birthday isn't over yet.

~  CE ; SURPRISINGLY LARGE  ~

Akira.  Phew, another beautiful day. The sun is warm...

Figaro. Wanna catch some rays?

Akira. Wah! Figaro...!? Aa.... your sudden appearance really gave me a fright!

Figaro. Sorry, sorry. I just couldn't resist the urge to be a little naughty when I saw your backside. See, since everyone did their utmost to surprise me on my birthday, I've been waiting to have my chance to do the surprising.

Akira. Ahaha. Though, now that you mention it
that was definitely quite a surprise after returning from the playground.

Figaro. "Figgy's very own birthday surprise!"
When Lord Snow and Lord White burst into the room, I thought my heart would stop. Moreover, they somehow brought out a giant stuffed bear as a gift....

Akira. It was even taller than you.

Figaro.
I appreciated the gesture, but I was at a loss since half of the room was occupied. —I might have to relocate to the other end of the room; kind of makes it difficult to know the room's owner, though.

Akira. But Rutile and Mitile, who came to celebrate once more before heading to bed, couldn't have been happier! Watching them drape over and hug the stuffed animal was really cute.

Figaro. It sure was a hit with those two. Even Leno couldn't help but laugh at the unusual size of it; well, I can't complain. Seeing everyone's smiling faces made for a good end to my birthday.

                        CHAPTER ONE

Figaro.  Take a look, sage. Did you notice the grass around here has different colors? It's used to make candy.

Akira.  Huh, grass for candy…. Dr. Dolce's forest has more wondrous treasure than I imagined.

Strolling around the forest with Figaro, I take a second look around.
Apparently, there are lots of unusual and exquisite plants here.

Akira.  ( Feels as if I’ve wandered into a candy maze with no escape… )

Figaro.  I’ve considered giving some of it to Rutile and Mitile. You won’t find this kind of thing down South.

Akira.  That’s a good idea! It is colorful and pretty, something I think they’d both enjoy.

Figaro.  Then this one is a candidate. Any other suggestions?

Akira.  Hmm, something that would please them both…

At Figaro's prompting, my gaze strayed to a forest brimming with curiosities. Trees with dangling candies, a fountain spouting out in seven different colors, stones made of jelly... and Nero staring into the sky.

** I got many results for the name of this bombtastic delicacy:  bomstine, bombstine, bombsteine, bombastine and went with the one I felt was the funnest to say out loud .  I am also not 100% certain if it’s a fruit or a nut due the kanji being used;  however,  seeing as they were frightened of the debris flying around,  figured it was a safe assumption to be a fruit protected by a hard-shell.

Figaro.
Hey there. You seem rather happy, Sage. 一What in the world are you reading?

Akira.  Good afternoon, Figaro. It's the "Book of Faces". A magical tool I got from Murr.

Figaro.  Ah, so goes the rumor. With magic, you create an image of the scene in front of you on a blank page. I heard it's a way to record your memories of everyone, one by one.

Akira.  Actually, I was hoping to request one from you, but I'm not sure which location would work best.

Figaro.  In that case, why don't we go to my clinic? We can have a sleepover with everyone.

Akira.  A sleepover at the clinic?

Figaro.  Yeah, all the Southern Wizards. We were planning a day off from work, just to unwind from the daily grind.

Figaro's clinic is located near Lake Russell in Southern Country. It is a place that is very dear to the hearts of the southern wizards. There was once a crisis in the area, and wizards from the south and east worked together to protect the clinic.

Liam. A blessing here…. Sure, I'd be happy to help.

Lennox. Thank you. That means a lot to me, Liam.

Liam. I should be the one thanking you. To be able to teach someone who cares so much about my master how to make knives …. I'm going to have to put a lot of effort into it so that my master won't laugh at me for still being a novice from the grave.

Figaro. We'll lend a hand, too. Let's give everyone waiting outside a holler.

Thus, we set about making our talisman knives.

Lennox. …I did it.

After several hours of instruction from Liam, we finally succeeded in completing Lenox's knife with the help of the wizards waiting outside. Light shining into the workshop reflected off the carefully polished tips of the blades.

Liam. That's a beautiful knife. Hard to believe this is your first time making one of these.

Lennox. It’s thanks to you and everyone else who helped.

Lennox raises his knife and narrows his eyes dazedly.

His sharp, confident profile was covered in a bead of sweat, and he was smiling brightly.

Once again we found ourselves in front of Ethan's room.

Faust.  It's just as Lennox said, though minute, some power remains.

Breaking the seal will probably do no harm, but we should be cautious.

Lennox.  Noted.

His expression was rather stiff as he nodded. Figaro then patted him on the back.

Figaro.  It's going to be alright. We're here.

That surprised me a little. I would have expected Figaro, a well-spoken and sociable man, to be more expressive at a time like this. Yet, I noticed that Lennox's expression seemed to soften at those short, simple words.

Faust.  If by some chance you unleash something, I will purify it with my own hands.

Lennox. Do as you wish.

Lennox.  Yes,  thank you.  Now, I will break the seal.

Lennox.  <Forsettao Meiuvat!>

Shino.  <Matztzāh Sudipas!>

Lennox and Shino were largely responsible for moving the heavy debris.

Nero.  <Adnodus Omnis!>

While Nero magically aligned the walls, Heathcliff meticulously filled in the gaps with a solvent made of stone particles. Faust assigned work that best suited each of their qualities. He gives instructions, lending a helping hand with magic himself.

Faust.  Liam, were there stairs here? A section of the railing was left.

Liam.  That's right. It led to a storeroom in the attic.

Faust.  The impact from the roof collapsing caused the west side of the workshop to tilt. I guess the ground may have been loose to begin with; but I am sure Ethan would have taken some countermeasures. Let's repair it by making use of the original foundation. Leno, see if you can find out what the foundation looked like before it was damaged.

Lennox.  Understood.

Faust.  Shino! We're going to lift the roof with our magic.

Faust.  Lennox went to Ethan's workshop alone?

Akira.  That’s right.  When we visited his room….

Rutile.  We found this letter.

As we awoke, it was raining outside. The wind was howling and the windows shook from time to time. Lennox had probably gone off by himself early in the morning so as not to wake us.

Figaro.  You guys have some breakfast and relax, I'll go check on them.

In this weather, it might be better for everyone to take it easy.

Faust.  Me too. Nero, sorry, but take care of the sage and the children.

Shino.  Huh? Why are we staying at home?

Mitile.  That's right, we're coming with you! With the weather like this, we should all work together to fix the workshop. For the sake of Mr. Leno's precious friend. …When he talked about Ethan, he had such tender and happy eyes. When he told us that he’d passed away yesterday, his voice was the same as usual, but he seemed sad….

Mitile made an appeal with an earnest look in his eyes.

Figaro looked back at Rutile, who was also leaning close to him.

Liam. He had been sick for a long time now. Not long after the Great Calamity, just like that, he…

Akira. That’s…

Liam. The last time I saw him, when he was still able to get up, he was writing a letter to someone. I think that's the one you’ve got there. But, he had very little magic remaining in him, at the time. With all the disasters that happened, I guess it didn't reach you successfully.

Liam bowed apologetically. His disciplined and sincere personality comes through in his demeanor.

Liam. On behalf of my teacher, I apologize.

You came all this way to visit, but unfortunately it was a wasted trip.

Lennox. No apology necessary. Had I known Ethan was in town, I would have come sooner.

Allow me, at least, to mourn him. Where is his tomb?

Liam. This way. I'm sure he’ll be pleased to know you came.

Liam leads us to a small grave adjacent to the workshop. Freshly picked flowers were placed on the headstone. He probably remembers his teacher in this way every day.

Liam. When I turn to stone, bury me near this workshop. …That was my teacher's dying wish. There was no other place for him except here. He always said that: this is the only place I can belong.

Lennox. …That’s a testament to its importance. Both you and this shop.

An enormous kettle, a modest pair of scissors.... The store had everything, but because of recent events, I couldn't help but be drawn to the weapons. Not only swords and axes, but also spiked clubs, disk-shaped blades, and other unnamed items.

Akira. ( …The thought of it being a weapon is a little scary. When you look at it as a work of art, it's actually kind of cool; I wonder if Lennox's friend, Ethan, is making weapons somewhere in this city too….)

Figaro. Leno, go meet Ethan. The rest of us will keep an eye on things around here.

Faust. If something goes wrong, come straight back.

Lennox. Understood. Thank you both..

Mitile. That reminds me, Mr. Leno, your friend is someone you fought with in the past.

Like a comrade-in-arms, right?

Mitile's question was innocent. Before coming here, Lennox told the younger wizards that he was going to see Ethan, but he did not tell them about the resentment he had toward humans.

Lennox. Yeah. We haven't seen each other in a long time.

Rutile. That sounds so exciting! Please give my best regards to your friend.

Lennox. ….Right. I'll pass it on.

Akira. Um...... Lennox. Would you mind if I accompanied you?

Lennox. You too, sage?

Akira. The day of Faust’s…

A bitterness spreads through my heart. Faust had once served as the right-hand man of Alec, the first king of the Central Kingdom, during the time of the Revolutionary Army. He devoted himself to changing the world so that humans and wizards could coexist in harmony, but what awaited him was a cruel fate.

Lennox. ...As a result of that incident, the Revolutionary Army lost many of its comrades and we became scattered. The last time I saw Ethan was before his departure from the army.... He was hurt, angered, mourning, and cursing the betrayal of mankind.

Akira. ….

Before long, the king of Central had been replaced. Lennox heard a rumor during his travels. A blacksmith wizard was said to be casting curses on people in the Central Kingdom.

Lennox. That blacksmith, they say, masquerades as a human and graciously takes on the task of servicing weapons of people he's never met. However, this is only a convenience. Under the guise of maintaining the weapon, the wizard casts a curse on the weapon's owner. When I heard that rumor…the first who came to mind was Ethan.

Akira. …Eh?

Cock Robin.  Oh,  oo- oh no!!

It was then that Cock Robin crossed the courtyard. The stack of luggage and papers he was carrying in his hands was about to collapse and topple over. Without a second thought, Lennox rushed over and caught the luggage as it was about to fall.

Cock Robin.  Oh, thank you, Mr. Lennox!

Lennox.  No problem. More importantly, are you okay? This is  …  a lot.

Cock Robin.  Honestly, as much as I'd like to say everything is okay, the truth is…  We have packages and papers addressed to the house which were delivered to the castle, but were too much for me alone…

His shoulders slumped. His complexion was pale and he looked exhausted.

Lennox cast a glance back at Figaro and Faust.

Lennox.  Dr. Figaro, Sir Faust.

Since training is just about over, why don’t we provide some assistance?

Figaro.  Alright. There’s nothing urgent that I need to teach you, so it’ll be okay. Come, Faust.

Faust.  ....Fine. Because of this, we don't even know if we have an urgent request.

Cock Robin.  Thank you very much! Well, if you don't mind, can I please make a personal request that we deliver everything addressed to the wizards specifically? It's not a lot, but the addresses got all mixed up together. I'd really like to ask for some documents as well. There is some confidential information, and Mr. Drummond would be angry if I showed it to anyone other than the royal court….

Rutile.  We'll take care of it! Let's sort it out together and get them delivered to everyone.

The Fantasia of a Craftsman Reaching the Days of Old

Faust.  Alright. Let's take a break.

Shino.  Already? We were just getting to the best part.

Mitile.  I’d like to keep going too! Would that be alright, Dr. Figaro?

Figaro.  Ha ha. You're working hard, Mitile, but don't overdo it. Part of training is to rest your body.

Rutile.  That's right, Mitile.

Come join me for a cup of tea beneath the shade. It’s herbal with a dash of honey.

Mitile.  Herbal tea with honey......! T-Then I'm going to take a quick break.

On that day, I was observing the joint training of the Southern and Eastern wizards. Excluding Nero, who was running late, the seven of them were hard at work. The most enthusiastic of the bunch was Mitile. He had been an admirer of Shino's young but strong magic power for some time. Being so close in age, they are probably influenced by one another in a positive way.
